I think what Mike said, about the unsinkable sinking, is what makes it so intriguing. Everyone felt so protected and secure like children do in their own homes. It's scary to think that something like this can happen, though it does all the time.

Great post, Dee! I love discussions like this. :)Hilary Wagnerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18199287020561210673noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2173408054965817352.post-1540282019464407002012-03-21T08:49:58.959-05:002012-03-21T08:49:58.959-05:00Blogger is not letting me reply individually for s...Blogger is not letting me reply individually for some reason! Thanks for all your replies. And thanks Caroline and Shannon for the extra book recs. Michael, I can see how some kids would want to avoid reading about it. My daughter was kind of freaked out by it until she read the Survive the Titanic story and realized she picked the right route to survive.

Paul-Submarine survival stories scare me. Between running out of air and having the weight of the ocean breach the hull-ugh, bad news.

Andrea-I hope your daughter does enjoy these. i would have as a kid.

Matthew, I wasn't crazy about the movie either, especially the ending. And Mike, it was sort of a grand tragedy wasn't it? The scope of it was incredible. I read reports of how it really affected people who didn't even know anyone aboard. It was just so unfathomable.

Laura's link is very interesting. I learned things I didn't know about the ship and the history. I believe it has gripped so many because of the grandness of the tragedy, and the paradoxical nature to the unsinkable sinking.Mike Winchellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11771482167997501541noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2173408054965817352.post-49263416785995300472012-03-19T12:29:28.375-05:002012-03-19T12:29:28.375-05:00I was obsessed with the Titanic was I was 12 and 1...I was obsessed with the Titanic was I was 12 and 13! Of course I had a Leo fixation so that was part of it, but it was also because of all the "What if?" questions. So many little things contributed to the disaster, and if one of those things had gone right then maybe the disaster wouldn't have happened.

I wrote an A-Z post for T about this last year: http://lauramarcella.blogspot.com/2011/04/t-is-for-titanic.html

I have a niece who is almost 12 and I'll have to ask her what she knows about the Titanic disaster. Maybe since it's going on 100 years next month, some teachers will feature it in history class.Laura S.https://www.blogger.com/profile/13934230198562773803noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2173408054965817352.post-37683063930106091472012-03-19T12:26:35.278-05:002012-03-19T12:26:35.278-05:00My 4th grader is fascinated by the Titanic. (But he did tend to be on the fearful side.) My middle and youngest love to shout "I'm the King of the World."

I love the comments from writer friends on why the Titanic (and similar disasters) might be so popular in the public's imagination. I particularly resonate with the idea of "trying to figure out how you would react in such a situation, in a sense testing out the limits of your own bravery and ingenuity."Michael G-Ghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07947421844294471304noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2173408054965817352.post-66572836270900435352012-03-19T08:29:40.168-05:002012-03-19T08:29:40.168-05:00Wow - my daughter would love these!
