  1. What do I love in a Middle Grade cover? I love the use of bright colors and imaginative illustrations. I especially like it when the cover actually reflects what happens in the story. :) That cover is gorgeous, but I've noticed that all the covers I've seen done by Brandon Dorman are.

  2. I love your new cover. It so fits with book 1's cover. I won't enter the giveaway since you're getting me an ARC for your interview. Can't wait to read it!

  3. Definitely a good cover! One weird thing that helps-- if a cover is predominately one color, I can group it with others that are similar. The students really love that.

  4. Wouldn't be right for me to enter, but I will say: that's an awesome castle on the cover!

Heide - You are right - Brandon is incredibly talented - I love all his covers, too.

Yes Ms. Yingling! I love when books of similar covers/size are grouped on a shelf together - ha!

  12. I love this COVER! I love my MG covers to be whimsical, detailed, and very colorful. As a kid, it really makes you want to read this book. I might be an adult now, but I still have kid tastes. LOL.

    Lovely.

  16. I love the details! There are usually some cute little bits hidden away in a corner if you pay attention!

  17. I actually like how the cover is like a portal, a doorway if you will. The dual (and perhaps unintentional) meaning of that blows my mind. It offers a portal into a new world and one that is actually pictured on the cover. Clever. Also, I like that this is blue because if I remember correctly, the first book is red. The blue tells me that things are a shade more serious than the first book. I can't wait to read it.

  18. I love imagination and unique imagery in MG covers. A boring cover is a major turn off.

  19. I love to see a font used as part of the cover story and not just put on as a afterthought. Your cover is awesome! I also like covers that are gender neutral because it makes it easier to get boys to read a book with a girl MC if the cover isn't too girlie.

  23. Middle grade covers that appeal to the intended audience (and all of us who love those books) have unique colors, a focus that reflects all or a part of the story and reach out and grab the reader saying read me now! Your cover does all of those things. Anxious to read it.

  24. Bookwurrm - yes! love this portal idea.

I love how it fits so well with Storybound's cover. Thanks for the kind words, everyone! Would love to hear some of y'all's favorite MG covers!

  35. Gorgeous cover. It and STORYBOUND's cover make quite a pair.

  36. I love bright colors, and continuation from one cover to the next.

    This is great!

  37. Great cover! I like covers with lots of detail and a whimsical element to the illustration. I know you shouldn't judge a book by its cover, but when I pick up a recommended book and find a plain, uninteresting cover, it makes me pause.

  38. i love this cover! i like covers that draw your attention and make you wonder what's inside. I love the castle on this one and how it's almost looming over them making you wonder what's inside or what they're headed for : )

  39. I love the colors chosen for the two covers. What draws me in are those little details that tug at you and relate to what the story is going to be about. Like this one with the castle builds the mystery and intrigue.

  40. i"m fairly open when it comes to covers! I'm drawn to striking colour palates though - which doesn't necessarily mean bright colours (it could be black and white!), but ones that contrast each other well and stand out. I also love certain font choices - like Storybound and Story's End, those were reminiscent of classic stroytales but had those fun, hard scalloped edges that told a story within itself.

  41. I like beautiful colors and whimisical covers for MG novels, these books are GORGEOUS and I LOVE the blue in Story's End!!

  42. I love anything in a cover that draws me in! I love beautiful artwork or something on the cover that keeps me thinking during the story of how it all will connect at the end. This cover is beautiful and I cannot wait to read Story's End!!! I NEED to read it!!!

  43. I like MG book covers to be colorful and hint at some tension in the book. I don't like them to look to little kiddish or I know my students will NEVER pick them up!

  44. The cover is perfect, just as perfect as the cover for Storybound was! I absolutely cannot wait to read Story's End. I love bright colors and fun illustrations, which is probably why MG covers are usually some of my favorites. They just feel more magical and more whimsical.
